Walker Road Gets Clean-Up by Dover Federal Team

In efforts to clean America's highways, 27 employees of Dover Federal recently gathered for the semi-annual "Walker Road Clean-Up," part of the credit union's Adopt A Highway sponsorship. Twice per year, the credit union team picks up trash and other debris along Walker Road to help beautify the local community.

"The clean-up of Walker Road demonstrates our commitment as a credit union team to the community we serve in Dover," commented David Clendaniel, President/CEO of Dover Federal. "The large attendance of our employees to pick up debris along a 1-mile stretch of road shows the heart of the credit union."

As part of the commitment to the local community, the 51-year old credit union participates in several sponsorships, donations and other community events throughout Delaware during the year. Dover Federal has sponsored the Adopt A Highway on Walker Road since 2001.

Local CEO Tackles Financial Issues in Washington

In the midst of the nation's economic crisis, David Clendaniel, CEO of Dover Federal Credit Union, traveled to Washington D.C. in late February and briefly met with Delaware's newest senator, Senator Ted Kaufman. Clendaniel led a team of 11 credit union professionals and volunteers to meet with Senator Kaufman to represent the interests of Dover Federal's members/owners and the local community.

"Now more than ever before, the safety and soundness of our credit union can be impacted by new legislation that is being run through Congress at an alarming rate," said Clendaniel. "Meeting with Senator Kaufman allowed us to present the credit union’s viewpoint on several key bills preparing for a vote."

The Senator challenged Clendaniel on the taxation issue, where the not-for-profit status enables credit unions to be exempt from corporate taxes, which gave Clendaniel the opportunity to explain the unique structure and philosophy of credit unions. Clendaniel pointed out how credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, democratically controlled and owned by members, and gave examples of how they serve the Delaware community. He also invited the Senator to visit Dover Federal branches to meet members and learn first-hand what makes credit unions different and special.
